I'm doing a history report on the 1940's. Obviously i'll need info on WWII, as it takes up half that decade, and I need a book to cite sources from. Anyone know of a good informational WWII or Cold War book I can read up on? Much appreciated.:daisy:

Just go out and buy "The War". It's around $30 but it's a good book for information.

With about nine different fronts, several completly different wars at sea, the poltical background to the main players, the home fronts and the genocides i think you need to be a specific :p

It also appears silentsniper_42 suggestion covers only 1941-1945 and focuses on a handful of people from the united states. Not really a good book to deal with the entire subject ... consdiering millions of people were involved and the war had been ongoing for over a year and a half by which point.

I suppose a decent start would have to be Chester Wilmot's The Struggle For Europe. It covers both the Eastern and Western Front through 1944-45 and also gives background information in brief of what happened in the pervious years of the war.
The drawbacks of course is it was published well before the Ultra secret was disclosed and as stated focuses only Europe in the last two years.

Hastings Amerageddom covers the same sort of subject,
although post Normandy however he appears much bias etc and there does seem to be some questions raised over the figures etc he uses.

Of course books which cover the entire subject, although since ive never read them i cant speak of there accuracy, how much deapth they go into and if they actually do really cover it all:

The Second World War - Winston Churchill (his 6 volumes rolled into one plus a new extra chapter iirc)
The Penguin History of the Second World War - muliple authors, seems to be highly rated
Teach Yourself the Second World War - Alan Farmer

Am sure Sir Basil Liddel-Hart also did a book covering the enitre war.

and of course...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to World War II - Mitchell Geoffrey Bard :p

Possibly Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation?

Would hit a little on the pre and postwar years.
