Hey guys
Well, I baught the game on Friday...have played it a while. And to be honest, the game is disapointing to say the least. With such a great potential EA games have produced yet another BF game that distances itself so far from reality whilst trying to replicate it.
After watching the news recently its also made me think hard about this game and what it portrays to us, the people "back home". Seeing the disturbing images of our British soldiers bailing out of vehicles in Basra has made me stop and think, "while Im sat here playing this, there are people going through something not too disimilar...in real life".
My question(s) I suppose is, does Battlefield 2 cheapen the efforts of both modern British and American veterans? Does it also promote a hatred/lack of understanding towards those of the Islamic faith by grouping the varying Islamic countries together into one "enemy"? Thus cheapening their efforts in aiding the fight against terrorism.
Because it sure seems like it.
I know that BF vietnam was pulled from the shelves due to the un "PC" story line of Vietnam, but something makes me feel the things above about EA games latest BF game.
What are your opinions on this? Discuss...evaluate...

I would class it as just a game, without any political or deep values. You could say the same for all war games.

Hmmmm, I think there are games out there that do promote a similar political note.
However there arent too many games that replicate present day, for instance a WW2 game does not promote the same political message that it would of done 50 odd years ago as there arent really many left to be offended. You also have to realise that something like a ww2/vietnam/Napolionic game more often than not allows the user to take on forces that may not exist within the world today......
Personally I think BF2 has really hit close to home with modern day politics, and has really played about with it in order to create a game that allows 'kids' (16+) to become envolved in the Iraq war in the comfort of their own home.
A friend said it best to me when he read this, "people ride on the back of death". Which is true of every war game. However there are very few games who ride off the back of death whilst its still going on ala ww2.
You also have to remember that within our modern climate we have varying races/cultures and religions within one society.....by grouping together those of Islamic faith with those of extreme Islamic fundementalism what kind of message are EA promoting to modern youth?

Perhaps it also provides people with an outlet..... who knows...
I get what your saying and being that the makers of the mod Desert COmbat (a mod based on the Iraqi war) had alot of input on this I would guess that the Arabic coalition portrayed in the game had to be fictionalized in order not to offend. I heard the developers even EMPHASISING that the arab coalition was fictional. So I guess that they saw the need to be ... polite? in order not to offend.
Im not making a point with this but Im guessing they attempted to avoid what Sani is saying but try to get as close as possible....
Am i the only one who thinks the Chinese faction feels like it was just tagged on? Mabey to avoid singling out the Arabic/Western culture conflict? Im probably wrong but the feel for the chinese faction is really crap compared to that of the US and Arabic coal.

I personally find BF2 to have worn off fairly quickly but I dont play multiplayer very much with it these days. Im guessing on a good server it could be fun.

exactly, I agree with you.
Although I should think that the game developers tagged China onto there for both your reasons, and because it highlights the "future" threat to America from Communist China and certain Islamic fundementalists....only for some reason couldnt say fundementalists and so went for islamic coalition which to be honest goes from non PC to even more non PC.

I'd agree about the statement about china. Yet i find the game fun when your playing at a LAN cafe or otherwise with some friends but over all generally boring. I belive that it is partially trying to find funding for the war efforts at the moment while covering all aspects of conflicts.
They may be empthasising that it is fictional but if the invasion of iraq didn't happen how many people think that they would have been in the game?

As with most online games you get good and bad matches but overall i feel the game is quite good. I was playing Joint ops for quite a while but so far BF 2 I find is a better game. It has its faults but the lack of having to run anywhere an easy interface and fairly good maps has resulted in me playing it quite alot now. Although you do need broadband or a low ping to enjoy it.
