Time of Mission Start: 0845 (2039)
Area of Operation: Aalter Sector
Sitting at my forward base at about 0815 my squad leader Mike comes up to me and tells me someone has to go to Aalter to get some information on what is happening in the town. Me being an 21 year old excitable Canadian I decided to take the mission, little did I know my squad leader was going to choose me anyway for my keen ability to tell what a vehicle is just by its audio.
So I packed up my gear which consisted of my knife, a few canisters of smoke, a couple K rations and my Enfield .303 Scoped Rifle. Leaving the forward base, the sun had just raised above the horizon and was covered by the heavy clouds and fog. I left early because I expect to get to the city by night fall.
(0910) As I was on my way to Aalter I heard a group of our tanks heading down the road towards the North, which would take me about half way to Aalter, putting me ahead of schedule. The armor dropped me off at the cross roads between me and the town, I am now far ahead of schedule and need to find somewhere to hold up until night fall.
(0940) I am sitting here in a small group of trees, it is silent, it almost seems as if the war around me has stopped. I can't hear the crack of rifles, or the boom of the big 88's, hell I can even hear birds chirping and the window blowing through the trees above me. I almost drift off, until I realize this would be a perfect chance to sneak up on the town, because the Germans are probably drifting off themselves. I put away my binoculars and grab my rifle, and slowly on my stomach and hands and knees, work my way through the brush into the town.
(1005) I have managed to make my way into the town via some bushes and ditches. The town is still silent, in the distance I can hear the armor column clashing with the Germans. A Tiger just started his engine up and headed out of the army bases walls. I manage to take a quick snap shot of the beast before he left the town to fight with the other armor already slamming Tielst into pulp.

The Tiger
(1530) Many hours have passed since the Tiger had left the AB walls to enter the battle of Tielst, and I had have heard the odd plane fly over the town, but other then that I just watched sentries come and go, no close calls as of yet.
(1540) I can hear the rumble of the Tigers engine in the distance, as it gets closer and closer. The sound of his steel trends clacking and grinding up the asphalt road. But, it sounds like his engine has been damaged, I can hear it sputter and clank. Though the town itself is still eerily quiet, just the odd German sentry walks past my building.
(1600) It's here, the Tiger is here... black and gray smoke puring from his engine deck, a large hole is visible trough my scope in the side of the tank. As he approaches the town, I hear the subtle sound of slow foot steps coming up the stairs behind me. I turn to see a helmet starting to come up the stairs, I slowly and quietly bring my rifle up to my eye, and just as I'm about to pull my trigger, I see my mates face under the helmet.
The Germans are on the retreat from Teilst! I am needed back at the HQ for debriefing and to prepare for my next mission, slowly... I slink away into the fading light with my comrade at point. I can hear the Tiger rolling to a stop, then I hear three words I never want to hear again, "Halt! Ist Tommy!" I hear the crack of a German Kar98 seconds late, the sound of the bullet going over my head makes my hair stand on end... and then I see Mike slump over, the bullet passed right through his neck killing him outright.
Then the chatter of a MG34 rings out... I dive to the dirt slowly easing my self to the top of the clump of dirt I'm hiding behind. I see my target, in a window, firing in our direction but a bit to the left. I reach up and sight my rifle for 200 meters. Put the gray uniform in my sights, and squeeze... the firing stops. I slide back down and on my way past Mike, grab his dog tags and carry on.
(Again this all happened, some of it was sugared up a bit to make things a wee bit more exciting, but Mike did come get me, and Mike did get killed - only to respawn again-)
There will probably be another entry tonight, so stay tuned guys!
