Well, I'm an avid Battleground Europe (World War 2 Online) player, and I thought I would share an experience, one I hope I will have in 1944 DDAY.

Right now I am sitting with my Lee Enfield Mk4 .303 rifle in a bush near a German forward base. Forward bases in BE are basically an forward out post in between two towns that are heavily fought over. They can be blown up by combat engineers by placing satchel charges on them. The side that owns the forward base can spawn everything that can be spawned in the towns army base (AB) from this forward base.

Anyway, I'm sitting in my bush with my sniper rifle, it's about 0030 and the moon is covered by a few clouds. The Germans in the area (33 Panzerkampf gruppe) are preparing to launch an attack on the French town of Aaltar defended by the British 1st Guards Brigade.

I am not shooting anything, or hunting anyone down, I am simply sitting, and listening and watching every piece of armor, truck, and infantry set up for the attack. Infantry are loading onto Skdfz 251 Halftracks. Pak40 and Pak36's with there crews are hooking up to Opel Blitz. Armor is forming up just be side me actually, some of the larger tanks have some German infantry sitting on them.

Some of the Germans are using open chat so I can see what they are saying. The odd Spitfire flies low and fast over the FB to scout the area, but the German Flak 38's and Flak 36's scare them off, and they don't notice the armor hiding in the bushes next to me. Luckily I am reporting everything I see coming out of the forward base, and have been doing this for the past 2 hours (real life time)

A German sentry just walked right past my bush line that I was in and actually paused to pull out his binoculars and look around. If I moved at all, he could hear or notice me and the jig would be up. The tension is amazing, even though it's just a game, you don't want to get killed because it took me almost 30 minutes (real life time) to get into position. Soon the sentry moves on and hops onto a Tiger I just as the armor column starts to roll toward Aaltar from Gent FB.

It's now about 0130 (game time) the moon is high in the sky and the clouds have cleared making it much brighter then it was an hour ago. Numerous times German guards walk past me in my bush, after they pass I peaked over a small berm line to see what I could see. I see a Skdfz 232 heading off to join the fight and four Flak 38's guarding the skies over the forward base.

The town that the Germans are defending is getting pummeled from the sky with JU87's and HE111's and from the ground by the big guns like 88's and Pak40's. I can hear the fight going on in the distance, the thumping of anti aircraft guns like the Bofors 40mm or Cmle 25mm. The crack of grenades and rifle fire going off in town and the almost buzzing sound of the MG34.

My squad mates are telling me that the town is getting hammered hard, the bombardment from the sky has let up and the tanks and infantry are starting to roll in. With all of our armor and anti tank guns destroyed by the bombings we have nothing but AT rifle grenades and the odd sapper to kill them when they enter the streets.

It's now about 0230 and an HE111 just zoomed over head no more then 100ft off the ground, 1 of its 2 engines on fire... seems our AA gunners are accurate. In the distance I hear the roar of the 111's engines fade, then mere seconds later, a low rumble of it bursting into flames as it hits the ground.

The town that we were fighting so hard to defend has been over run and is now under German control. The 1st Guards have been pushed out and the 33rd PanzerKampf Gruppee has taken its place, I am now almost 30 kilometers behind German lines and need to find my way back Allied ground so that I can collect my points and not lose the sniper out of the spawn list... wish me luck!

All of this actually happened, I am still running back to Allied lines, and have killed a few German soldiers trying to stop me. I really hope I can get this sort of experience out of 1944 D-Day because this is the most exciting, nerve racking, tense moments I have ever felt in a game.

Great read! I know exactly how you feel too, the only game that has EVER given me a surge of adrenaline is WWIIOL. Whether I get it sneaking up on an enemy position to report troop movements, bouncing that 109 thousands of feet up, or just sailing a patrol boat along the coast in support of an advance on dry land, some of the experiences this game provides are totally and utterly unparalleled.

I too hope 1944 matches up, WWIIOL has definitely set a benchmark for immersion.

Yeah, but I heard about those free trial invite thingies where you wont need credit card and you could play it free for month(?).

And yeah, Its not very hard get into it. Gameplay works fine, though I had some problems whit fps when I had 6600GT.

Ya there is a lot of free trials right now but they still require a credit card, but if you don't like the game after the trial just cancel it like a week in advance to avoid any charges and you'll be fine.

The sad thing about that, is your missing out on awesome gameplay. The only thing that people really need to get past, is the graphics are about par with PS2 and XboX. The game play and immersion, are far better then any sand box shooter.

Also the map is about 3 times bigger then 1944 DDay I believe, something like 300 and something square kilometers or something.

I think it was last year or another time that the FJ where added to the game ,how are they in it like you jump from planes all the time or can fight from the ground also too,and any links to pictures of them. Also is this game in what year, like 1940 or so?,and if then the later uniforms and weapons etc.. come later on as the game moves on,or there all there now and its not particular year?,thanks.

The game is set in 1939-1941, there is one FJ unit that can be moved around by the high command once a week. They usually only parajump into battle, but if the town they are stationed in is threatened then they will fight on the ground. I will get some screen shots and what not tomorrow

The game has been around since 2001. In the beginning all of the vehilces where in that time zone... but now some of the vehicles like the TigerI are going beyond 1941... so I'm sure they will creep forward. The Sherman 76 was just introduced and they were put into the field in 43 if I remember correct

Bloody good read up the top there. I almost want to get this game now... But I just can't get over the less-than-OFP graphics and subscription... I'm not a walking money pot.

THat was an excellent read. I love how immersive that game is... assaulting towns and defending are my favorite, though. May I tell you of my favorite experience? I got the two-month free trial from a friend last year and had a blast.

So, I was with the SAS division on the frontline, moving up the main road towards a bridge just on the outskirts of the town we had deployed from, with hedgerows and fields on the left and right. The sun had just risen, and it was a perfectly sunny day- blue sky, few clouds. I was going through the new stuff, checking my gear (including bouncing grenades! Rejoice!) when, out of nowhere, I hear a crack, and my squad leader goes down. Turns out the Germans had a whole squad of recon guys near our position, and our squad was the first they saw.

Naturally, we all hit the ground, wondering what to do. We decide to pull back and await further orders. We get into a nearby barn and church, with me and an MG gunner on steeple duty. We could hear rumbles in the distance, with division chatter telling us that the Germans were counterattacking across the river. The order went out to hold the bridge on the river at all costs. The snipers were still picking off people for about 20 more minutes, with my Bren buddy and I drawing fire in the church steeple occasionally.

Then, we saw one our tanks, a Churchill, coming back across the bridge from the forest in front, loaded up with infantry, including the CO of the division. It is followed by German infantry and two StuGs (i forget which kind), a full german force. Our squad, as well as the stragglers from the tank, were the only ones fighting at the time, the Bren gunner mowing down infantry that got too close, me with my Enfield taking potshots at the advancing enemy, the Churchill backed up in the crossroads firing its main gun at anything that moved.

The StuGs, on the bridge, started firing on the building the rest of my squad was in. Infantry had gotten into the city, some even trying to flush us out of the church (one guy was crouched, coming up the stairs, so concentrated on going slowly that he didn't even see me throw the grenade:D ). My squadmate with the Bren finally went down and I got hit, so I buggered out, leaving the steeple and waiting in the church for enemies.

We had just gotten Spitfire support, two planes making runs on the StuGs and any infantry stupid enough to be on the road.

Now, it's about here that things got blurry for me. AT guns on the OTHER side of the bridge started firing, and we thought that they were enemies, but when one of the StuGs blew, we knew they had to be friendlies. The other StuG tried to pull out, the engine straining from the late gear shifts, until it, too, was hit. I never saw it blow, but there was fire from the engine when I last saw it.

Our squad, having taken heavy casualties (only two of us had survived the entire ordeal), decided to pull out of the city into one of the outlying fields. So I come out of the church, and there's this raging infantry firefight in the street, with two SAS guys behind the now destroyed Churchill under fire from MP40s and an MG34. I backtracked, went around the entire town, and finally found my squad, who was pulling out. We ran as fast as we could to find the rest of the division.

That was one hell of a fight. I killed two SMG infantry, but I got shot running away to our lines.:p

I would imagine making videos of WWIIOL to be dull ordeals, but actually being in on playing it is great.
