So...
What should I do?
Stick with a ati 9600 pro, wich is newer (more options like: smartshader 2.0 etc.) than the ti4600, but less powerfull (400 Mhz to 600 Mhz), or should I take the TI4600?
I like the the TI4600 because its a raging clasic and I like Nvidia because they give you less BS than Ati and have more stable drivers.
I like Ati because the cards seem to have less dificulty playing hl2, and I plan to play alot of hl2 mods in the future.
What do you co-gamers think?

well theres other people out there that make better drivers for Both cards, but I've always trusted Radeon/ATI.
I would stick with ATI, you can push them more, you read all the time to be careful with G's because they can over heat, I've done so many bad things to my ATI and it still kicks strongs...

I have a 9600 as a backup (since i've got my 9800pro) yet i jumped to ATI as soon as i realised that my Gforce2 screwed up 18 times in one day and i had no tech support for it at all.
my 9600 i've never had any problems at all. no problems with any ATI drivers so yeah i'd say 9600 :)

As much as I would urge you to save up to buy the 6600GT (Decent Standard these days), I would have to say (if you really need a graphics card NOW), go buy something in the 9600 range. :)

I got my x700 Radeon for $119.00.
Nut what is the price rang, if you don't already have the cards?

This is the case: I allready have the Ati 9600 Pro (3d prophet), but I am really thinking about buying a ti4600 because my exprerience with nvidia is much better than ati. Thereby I am not planning to play the latest games, at least not further than hl2, fear, etc.
I also have a sempron 2400+ and I think the ti4600 might be in better balance with the rest of my system. The ati would have more performance with a faster cpu. I might be better of with more power and less extra options with only take power from my cpu. Wouldn't I?
I can have a ti4600 for about $ 55 - 65. The 9600 Pro is about the same price, sometimes a few dollars more expensive but yeah, pricelike they're pretty close.

I always had nVidia cards but I think I'm hopping over to ATi whether they are faster or not.
ATi always had better drivers, normally the ATI Catalyst OpenGL drivers are much more stable compared the ForceWare drivers.
Especially when we talk 'bout older games like RTCW, DoD, HL, CoD, those games use OpenGL and they don't run as good with ForceWare drivers (nVidia).
And I like games like DoD, CoD, RTCW, etc so I'm gonna get myself a X900XTPE when it's released.
I would compare the Radeon 9600 to the GeForce FX 5700...
But I think the X900 will rule all other cards, because the prototype currently has better stability than others.
If you want to play current-gen and old games with normal framerate and no disappearing things or artifacts choose ATI.
I think I'm gonna replace my GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with my old Radeon 7000.
Not because I'm a fanboy but because my pc can't handle newer games and I like older games. In DoD I currently get 40 average FPS and my R7000 gave me 200FPS!!! Thats quite a difference.
Just a hint ;) and I'm not a fanboy, nVidia always had great cards, but they drop a lot of things which makes older games look like shit or play like my grandfather drives his car...

Thx, I'll certainly take that in concideration! If I was you and if you really want a great card which will help you a couple of years forward you should take the X900XT (R520 Fudo) in consideration.
Since ATI has the best prices out there and most stable drivers (with newer OpenGL drivers for specifically older games).
Currently the 7800GTX is on top, also a great card but too much $'s and ?'s I say.
If I were you I would get myself a mainstream card like the 6600(GT) or X700(XT), because those have the best quality/quantity ratio atm.

Yep :)
I'm really considering to buy a 9700 Pro, wich has four more pixel pipelines and more musclepower. That should at least do the job 'till next year. :)
btw, is a 9600xt much better than the pro?

Well over clocked the 9500 Pro is better then the 9600xt, so right there you should go with the 9700pro because it will be even better then the 9500pro and 9600XT.
How much money you willing to spend, and remember the more pipelines the better.
My first card was a Radeon 7000, and I still have it in my other PC and runs perfect, I also have a Radeon 9000 and it run HL2 just fine...
Also remember Name Brand isn't always the best way to go with Radeon. Radeon lets other people ship there cards but it still has the ATI Trademark on the card and that means alot, and the prices are very good, most of the time 40% to 50% less then a Name Brand ATI Radeon Card.
Go to www.powercolor.com, they make a damn good ATI, and there reviews are always good. I own one and love it.
And heres something for people that have heat problems... http://www.powercolor.com/product_a_heatbuster.htm

I wouldn't go with the Ti4600. Newer games just don't seem to like it. (Battlefield 2) Also, lately, NVidia's drivers have been giving me a bit of a pain in the neck.

Well,
As promised, I'll post the result.
I went looking for the best price/quality cards in the low budget range, and I found that the ati 9800 Pro and the Nvidia 6800 Le where good affordable cards. Now I only need the money to buy one, and since our minister of education has done a bad thing (he messed up the schoolpayment terms), so I will have to wait.
I think I will eventually go for the 6800 Le.
