You heard the kind people at valve! Everyone with Steam and who has not purchased DOD:S, can try it out for a weekend. Why turn down this generous offer? :D
I personaly think its nice because i've been rather uncertain if i should buy it or not. Getting to try it out is just cool.
PS: The preloading can take quite a while. I'LL SEE YOU ON THE BATTLEFIELD!

The preloading can take quite a while.
Tell me about it, Ive been downloading for almost 5 and a half hours straight :/
Wouldnt be that bad if it didnt lag my computer, leaving me to check forums and play games in lag.
Meh, Itll all be worth it. ;)

Heh, yeah. I actualy had a funny incident: Almost had it completely preloaded, but then i had somekinda virus. (Not related to the steam files, no worries) Took me 2 days and a late night's work to get it terminated.. And as a bonus, i had to start the preloading all over. :o
God bless those vira making "/(%(%# fuckers out there.

Do you need the full game of HL2 to play this weekend, or is it a stand alone demo?

you dont need hl2 to play dod:source. I have source (had it since october of 05) it's a really fun game. Especially when you first start to play. You can be runing along and then boom, a panzerschrek goes past your head and mg starts spraying at you from no where lol. It's really fun, you guys should defenetly try it out. It only cost $20 bucks if you guys are thinking about buying it.

I saw that CompUSA had it as a bundle with CS:S and....some other game for approx. $30. I may just get it, but I don't really get into the CS(:S) community or DOD(:S) for that matter. Too gungh ho for me as I enjoy a game mostly for its technical aspects. Players start getting rude, obnoxious and beligerant when you aren't an elite player. Ruins most games for me.

WOW, i'm downloading it right now and my wait time is 160 minutes. Anyone else experience any delay's like I am?

wow, i'm actually impressed. I think it's alot better than the first DOD. The fire fights are a little more fun and MGs aren't like these ultimate weapons (they're still REALLY strong though). I had lots of fun playing it. You can deploy MGs on basically any flat surface so that's cool. I also like the Garand and how it has iron sight, but they didn't implement any sway.

Im actually considering buying it. I've been a bit skeptic ever since i first heard about Dod:s. But i must say that i really enjoy playing it. First of all, the graphics are amazing, then the few but good changes in gameplay. (and some bad, but nevermind) And then the fun stuff. (Like that PING sound when you shoot someones helmet off) :D
Final: nice game.

Expect LONG wait times and frequently full servers. Right now there is 5 times the amount of people playing DOD:S than there usually is. It's worse than the day after Thanksgiving sales at Bloomingtons. . . .

Well, Blackberry, I'll buy the thing and see how it plays. It's not much money and I spend less than that for a bad DVD movie. Here's to Gung Ho and beligerence! Yay!

Which is a free 300kb download.
They're also selling DoDS standalone now.

Hehhhhh...just downloaded...two minutes left...can't wait to try out the game. It's taken a good hour for the downloading, but it will be well worth it.
I agree that it is insanely cool of Valve to let us non-owners try out the game. And yes, I shall see you on the battlefield.

Heh great game tonight Blackberry :D
So your the one who informed me about this free weekend... what are the odds of meeting you online?!
Well its a great game and i might just get it, but it aint dod 1.6 by a long shot! IMO the classic still remains number 1. Just a couple of things that they changed that i didnt like.
1.The normal run on source is like the sprint in 1.6!
2. Easier to bunnyhop
3.The kar98 isnt as accurate (and deadly) as it was in 1.6, it also has no bayonet!
4.The rifle grenades were annoying.. but it was good how they made it so they dont detonate on impact
Still a great mod though and an even better freebee!
It looks beautiful with the source engine and the ragdoll physics are hilarious
cheers again for making a thread on this, i wouldve missed this weekend otherwise ;)
if u get hl2, is dod source free?
nah u gotta pay for source too

Hell yeah, we were beating the crap outta them. :D
Well, now i would like to change some of my statements in my previus post.
Lets start by replying to xplosiv's comments:
1: Its just going too damn fast. The firefights can be rather confusing at times. I know its supposed to be "action paced", but sometime it just gets outta hand.
2: Jumping dont affect stamina, which i find utterly weird!
3: At first, i was like: "Okay, the mauser has a lower rate of fire than the garand, but it does more damage. Simple balacing." NO. The extra amount of damage that it does dont really make any difference in combat. (and yeah, the bayonet is missing, shame really.. I suppose its not politicly correct to stab americans.)
4: The rifle nades are actually okay made, because they can't be cooked off. However this can be countered by shooting them at a high angle..
But then again, it Is a action game, and its not trying to be anything else.
So i still think its a good game.

For those of you who did, hope you had a good time.
I've added a poll - lets see how the game was.

i think that at 1 point in time the Garand did have sway but a little bit before the weekend where every 1 got to play they took it out :(
im not sure why

I love the game. It is fast-paced, but requires brains. I do not have the best twitch skills (think CS), but I ROCK at this game because I plan, use tactics, and use teamwork.
The maps are very well balanced. You can almost always flank an MG if needed. I'm an assault guy -- running around with my thompson clearing buildings and throwing smoke grenades at flags to help capture points. Others like to snipe from the windows of buildings (until I come up behind them...).
The MGs are very important. A good player on an MG can make the difference between winning and losing: well-placed they can close off an avenue of approach, allowing you to concentrate on others, or assisting in an assualt. MG is in place; clears resistance in the area, assaulters move up, with the MG following to take position at the next area.
It's like turbo chess... with guns.

Hah, I preloaded the damn thing on Wednesday planning to play Friday at lunchtime (Noon PST) ... then Friday rolled around and instead of playing cs:s with my co-workers like I usually do, and where I would have surely seen the steam news release, I decided to surf the web!!! WTF how lame is that? I completely forgot about it. And my computer at home right now is a PIII-800 with some integrated graphics malarky, so the chance was lost. :(

I liked the graphics and the effects of the game. I hated the weapon system they used. What really pissed me off about the game is that someone can run around a corner and kill you with one shot without aiming. I like the way WWII online has their rifles setup. You actually have to take the time and aim the weapon, as appossed to a noob running around with crosshairs killing everyone with one shot. One other thing that really pissed me off about the game is every noob in the server is shouting stupid non-sense crap til the point where you can even hear the game anymore.

What i like about the game:
Requires somewhat more teamwork than most games.
Maps have many alternate paths, useful for flanking.
Graphics are very nice, HDR looks good.
Classes are O.k. balanced.
The ragdolls are awesome. :D
+All the small features. (Like the stun when a nade goes off close to you. Some may find it annoying, but i like it)
What i dont like:
Most of the maps are kinda one-sided, mostly in german favor.
The rifle system sucks.
Many noobs, but it's alot better now that 'noobweek' has ended.
They removed the brits. (argh ffs)
The price of the game. I think its just a little too much for a mod without the big changes. (Except graphics ofcause)
Conclusion: Im still considering buying it.

they can be cooked if you shot them at the ground and pick them up as soon as you fire them, (but you only have three seconds compared to a regular grenade) which has six seconds. works good in taught areas.
